Debra Gardner continues her commitment to community engagement and empowerment. Recently, she participated in events that highlight the importance of health worker advocacy and the celebration of Juneteenth in Chesterfield. Here are the key details from these important community activities.

Empowering Community Health Workers

On May 20, 2024, Shanteny Jackson and Ben Barber led a session on "Empowering Community Health Workers: Personal, Community, and Institutional Education & Advocacy." This virtual event, organized by the Virginia Community Health Worker Association (VACHWA), focused on the crucial role of community health workers (CHWs) in education and advocacy.

Debra Gardner had the opportunity to join this session, where CHWs shared their experiences and strategies to help others understand the significance of education and advocacy. This session aimed to empower health workers to advocate for themselves, their communities, and their profession, emphasizing the critical impact they have on community health and well-being.

Chesterfield Look Out! Juneteenth Celebration

As we approach June 19, Chesterfield is gearing up to celebrate Juneteenth, a significant day in American history that marks the emancipation of over 250,000 enslaved people in Texas in 1865. This day is now known as Juneteenth or America’s Second Independence Day.

To commemorate this important occasion, Meadowdale Library will host a musical Juneteenth celebration for the whole family on June 8. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the rich history of American music with musician and storyteller Calvin Earl. From spirituals to rock and roll, Earl's performance will educate and uplift the community, celebrating the diverse musical heritage that tells the American story.

Debra Gardner invites all Chesterfield residents to join these enriching events.
