As we look forward to 2025, several important laws will come into effect in Virginia, aimed at improving taxation policies, voting rights, and social services. These legislative changes reflect our ongoing commitment to making Virginia a better place for all its residents.
Taxation
HB 25 / SB 116: This law establishes an annual retail sales and use tax holiday for the first full weekend in August from 2025 through 2030. This initiative is designed to provide financial relief to consumers and boost retail sales during the back-to-school season.
Voting Rights
HB 441 / SB 605: Amends the definition of "person with a disability" for voting purposes to ensure eligibility for voting assistance outside polling places. This change aims to make voting more accessible for individuals with disabilities, ensuring that everyone can exercise their right to vote.
Social Services
HB 27 / SB 39: Establishes the Parental Child Safety Placement Program, which provides temporary placement options for children to ensure their safety.
HB 150: Prohibits in-person appearance requirements for SNAP benefits, making it easier for individuals to access nutritional assistance without unnecessary barriers.
HB 453: Reduces the waiting period for kinship foster care approval after certain felony drug offenses, facilitating quicker placement of children with family members.
